Description

The Université Côte d’Azur is pleased to announce the joint meeting of the 12th Semantics and Philosophy in Europe Colloquium (SPE12) and the 3rd Ontology As Structured at the Interface with Semantics (OASIS), taking place on 1113 October 2023.

SPE

The purpose of the Semantics and Philosophy in Europe (SPE) colloquia is to provide a forum for presenting research in the interface between linguistic semantics and various areas of philosophy (philosophy of language, philosophy of mind/cognition, metaphysics, and philosophy of mathematics).

OASIS

The OASIS conference series aims to promote conversation and cross-fertilization across different disciplines that interface with semantics, using ontological questions as shared reference points. The broad questions in the background are these:

  1. What basic ontological building blocks do we use to talk and think about the world?
  2. How do these building blocks get combined?
  3. How do grammatical and cognitive phenomena motivate the answers to the first two questions?

For more information, see the OASIS credo

We invite abstract submissions for 40-minute talks (30 min + 10min discussion) on the topic of either the general session or one of the three special sessions (see: Special Session “Complement Clauses”, Special Session “Identity”, Special Session “Intentions”). All sessions are shared between SPE and OASIS. Abstracts should contain original research that, at the time of submission, has neither been published nor accepted for publication. One person can submit at most one abstract as sole author and one abstract as co-author (or two co-authored abstracts). Authors who submit two abstracts may submit to different sessions.

For the general session, we invite any contribution on topics at the interface of linguistics and philosophy, including but not limited to the formal ontology of natural language and philosophically relevant semantic phenomena of any sort as well as philosophically relevant aspects of syntactic structure and the syntax-semantics interface.

Abstracts must be anonymous, in PDF format, 2 pages (A4), in a font size no less than Times New Roman 12pt. Please submit abstracts no later than 31 May 2023, indicating whether it is for the general session, or for one of the special sessions.

Abstracts should be submitted here.
